How it Works
Submit adoption application
All potential adopters complete & go through an application process. The first step is to complete & submit an adoption application.
Wait for application approval
Once your application is received, it generally takes about 3 – 7 business days to get an approval status. This timeframe can vary based on how quickly we receive responses from your references.
pay adoption fees
Adoption fees vary based on the pet. Each individual animal will have their adoption fee listed in their Petfinder biography at the bottom. Pay with cash or check.

Who We Are
We are the Martin County Humane Society – also known as the Carl Nettifee Memorial Animal Shelter. As an animal control officer in Fairmont many years ago, Carl pioneered the ideals of which we operate. The City of Fairmont and the Martin County Humane Society constructed the shelter in Carl’s honor. We shelter stray and homeless animals in Martin County and take owner surrenders as space allows.
Carl was quoted in the Sentinel on May 25, 1985, “This is a pretty good job, I enjoy it, but I guess I’ve always like animals. When I was a kid I’d always come home with stray dogs or things like that.” We are honored to carry on his love of animals.
